STUDIO LIGHTING

  1/2 Studio Lighting: For these two pictures I chose 1/2 lighting, what that means is that one half of the face is one lighting and the other side of the face would be one notch darker. I chose for then to have very neutral looks on their faces because I find it has more room for imagination. Its like the mona lisa, she has a slight smile on her face and that leaves room for so many different background stories to be told. No body knows what exactly was going through their head at the time that the picture was taken.

This was just a free picture that i took but i love the parts of the that the light accented. I really like how the Lauren (Left) has her eye as the main focus of her face. you are wondering what she is looking at and whats happening over there for her to have that reaction. I also like the lighting on the side of Hannah's (Right) face because it focuses in on her being the main point. I posed them like this because it shows unity and friend ship. Now a days that could mean going out for a coffee.

PAINTING WITH LIGHT

 Painting with light - To take this photo I had to set my shutter speed at a time of 30 seconds. I brought two lights with me and ran to the front of the camera. I started off by using the blue light to draw a wing on my left side (right in the picture). Then i took my red light and drew devil features on my other side. I really like this picture because it shows the two sides of a person and every one has a bit of a bad side. It also shows that nobody is perfect and everyone makes good choices and some wrong.

 Flash Duplication - To take these two photos I got some help from people in my class I asked them to get into different positions and continually switch every time I flashed the light. I really loved doing this type of light photo because it was so uncertain. You wouldn't know until the finale picture was done whether or not your pictures had worked out. I took the first picture in the storage room in front of the cabinet. I asked her to go on each side of it and whip her hair when i said to. I think this picture represents strength and and a fight against herself. She's trying to break free from reality and do what she wants t do.

Ambient (General) Lighting - The soft indirect light that fills the volume of a room with illumination. It softens shadows on people's faces and creates an inviting glow in the room. 

Main Light: The main light in a lighting setup is the primary light used. This primary light source is typically the brightest in your setup, casting the most prominent shadows. 

Fill Light: In a lighting setup, the fill light refers to the light source which is used to “fill-in” the shadows cast by the main light. This source can be a flash unit, or simply a reflector that is directed on the subject to illuminate the shadowed areas and lessen the contrast. 

Diffused Light: Diffused light is softened light, with less shadows and more even coverage. A diffused light source is most commonly achieved by directing light through a translucent material, such as a diffusion shoot-through umbrella, a soft box, or a diffusion reflector panel. Bounce light: Light that is bounced off a reflective surface, such as any of the following: a white card, an aluminized reflector, a wall, or the ceiling. 

Hair Light : Light source aimed at a subject’s hair to create separation from the background and add sparkle and highlights. 

Natural light: light obtained as a byproduct of natural chemical processes. It comes from something that emits its own light, and not just reflects it. Natural light doesn't require any type of fuel to operate, it is free and renewable. 

What colour is daylight?
What your really asking is the colour temperature of a light source. The hotter a item the bluer the light is. This is referred as the colour temperature. Daylight we perceive as white. Flash is a very good approximation but if your look at the picture it is slightly bluish. 

What colour are tungsten bulbs?
The lamp formerly known as Quartz has a more stable colour temperature throughout the life of the lamp, than tungsten-incandescant. These lamps get hot and have shorter lifespans than some others. CRI is 100.

What colour does flash mimic?
flash mimics the color distribution of pure sunlight, it’s much more suited to bringing out vibrant colors than the impure ambient light available in shaded or overcast environments.

BILL CUNNINGHAM

Street Photographer Bill Cunningham has been taking pictures in the streets of New York 1970. He has a passion for taking photos of beauty, people who live outside of the box, and fashion. In 1978 his pictures were featured in the New York Times and since then he has had his own column in the Times each week featuring the latest fashion trends on the runway and on the streets. He is a very humble man who believes that if you look for beauty you will find it. He has never taken any money from anyone because he says that once your getting paid you cannot be free with your pictures, you have to do what people tell you and they own your pictures. "Freedom is the most expensive thing in life" that is a quote that he said in his documentary "Bill Cunningham's New York". He lives in a tiny apartment in New York after getting kicked out of his apartment in Carnegie Hall. He goes to work every morning at the New York times and they have given him another column in the New York times but this time it was online where he audibly describes the latest trends of the week based on all of the outfits he has seen and taken pictures of.

 I picked him as my favourite photographer because he really inspired me and he is so wise and has taught me so much. He has shot at fashion shows for designers such as Oscar de la Renta and he is very close friends with Anna Wintour, the editor and chief of Vogue. When she goes out she will avoid every photographer but Bill and she loves all of his photos.

Bill is now 84 and still biking all around New York taking amazing photos, i think he should be an inspiration to all photographers!
